First week

We have finished the first week of our new school year. The year has started off strong. The kids got all their work done, so we're not behind. There was even much less arguing than usual. Dea hasn't complained about Math once! I'm not sure we've ever gone a whole week without a Math complaint. Jay is adjusting well to having more scheduled work. He's been excited about every subject! He's looking forward to doing the experiments in Science & can hardly wait for the projects for History. We started the year with Going Green for Science & Ancient Egypt for History. He's having a blast learning Latin, is doing fantastic in Math, and asks for extra reading time daily. In fact, I think the only complaint he has about school is that he wants to do more. I hope this attitude keeps up.
Dea is also doing a great job with her work. She's finally showing an increase in effort. She's also getting most of her work done in much less time. She's not thrilled with some of the work I require & has no problem letting me know it. It's still better than previous years, though. I hope she keeps up this effort.
I won't be able to really form a complete opinion about our new schedule or the new materials we're using, for a few more weeks (at least). So far, though, I'm happy with all of it. With this being the first week of the school year, we haven't done any experiments. We haven't done any projects yet, either. So far, the most hands-on thing we've done was Jay making a sticker cartouche with his name spelled in heiroglyphs. It'll go on the posterboard display we're going to make about Ancient Egypt.
I'm hoping to have time to post about our schooling on a daily basis, or at least more than once a week. This has just been a difficult week with migraines, back pain, school, etc. Next week, we'll be doing some Science experiments & History projects/activities. So, there should be plenty to post about.

Wow, it's loud!

I'm sitting here, watching Jumanji with the kids. I should get up & clean the house, but I really don't feel like it. I got 100% on my Psych exam yesterday. So, I was planning to take a day or two off, before starting the next section. I'm not sure I will, though. I think I'll start tonight. This next section is a small one & if I start it tonight, I should finish by the weekend. I would start right now, but there's too much going on for me to concentrate.
The gas company is working outside. Apparently, there was a gas leak. They've decided to rerun some pipes & move our gas meter outside. Maybe having the meter outside will mean they'll stop estimating our bill for 10 months at a time. I doubt it, but a little hope can't hurt, right? They're incredibly loud right now, though. Between their machines & the movie, I can barely hear myself think.

Finishing Projects

I just love when I finish projects. There is a small part of me that loves the feeling of acomplishment that comes with the final moments of a project. The main reason, though, is that once I have finished one project, I can add another! I've finished the book inventory. We had a few movies that hadn't been added to the movie inventory, yet, so I got those done. I got into the arts & crafts room and got it cleaned & reorganized. All the stuff that was put out there for storage has been moved to a better place. All the stuff the kids put out there, but didn't put away properly, has been put away. All the new school supplies & materials that have been sitting in my living room, have been put away where they belong. The arts & crafts room is clean & organized, again.
That's 3 projects finished. That means I can start 3 more projects. I think I'll wait on starting new projects, since the first phase of a project always takes a lot of time. I think I'll finish a few more things first, then I'll start some new projects. I still need to create the lab sheets for Jay's Human Body study. I'll do that today. Then, I want to get through the next section of my Psych course. I should be done with that by the end of the week. Next week, I'll put the finishing touches on some of my new products & hopefully have them in the store by the end of our break.
Once I've got those things done, I'll get started on my new projects. I have all our homeschool materials listed in Homeschool Tracker Plus & in the Excel workbook I set up years ago. I want to set up an Access database to replace the Excel workbook. I also need to set up a database for the educational DVDs, so I can keep track of them. I also want to get some work done in the office. There's a lot of boxes in the office. Some are full of things we're getting rid of, some have stuff we've been given but have no place for, and I'm not sure of the rest. I need to go through them, donate what needs to be donated, find places for things, and get those boxes out of the office. I also need to get to work on Dea's high school History classes - finding resources, planning out assignments, etc. Those will be my next projects. I plan to get started on the new projects in no more than 2 weeks.

Our Break So Far

We're finishing week 2 of our 4 week break. I only have about 2 weeks left to finish the things I need to get done. Then, it's Back to School time! So far, I haven't made a lot of progress. I have almost all of their materials ready for next year. I still need to pick up a few things for projects & labs and I need to make the lab sheets for Jay's Human Body study. I thought I finished the book inventory, but I was wrong. I only have 2 series of books that need to be added, so I should be able to finish today. I started the book inventory last year when I decided to reorganize our home library. It has been a long process (made longer by the fact that we keep adding to our collection), but it's almost done. Yay!
This weekend, I'm hoping to get into the arts & crafts room and get some reorganizing done. That's where we keep the schoo stuff, too. The kids have a tendancy to not put things away properly sometimes. Plus, we ended up using the room as storage over the last few months. So, the room is a bit of a mess. I need to get things out of there, put away the school stuff, get all the new school stuff put away, and make sure the art & craft supplies are all put away. If I can spend a day or two working in there, it'll be done. I would have done it the first week of break, but most of that week was spent on pain killers & muscle relaxers for my back.
If I can get all of that taken care of by the end of the weekend, I'll be thrilled. Then, I can spend the last 2 weeks of break working on my schooling & putting the finishing touches on some new products I want to get into the store.
Well, off to get some housework done.
