Turkey Pox
Charity loves Thanksgiving above all other days. She is ready before the rest of her family, and can hardly wait to get to Nana's house for turkey. On the way to Nana's, they discover that Charity has chicken pox & turn around to head back home. Charity is sad that Thanksgiving will be ruined (after all, it isn't really Thanksgiving without the turkey or Nana). Then Nana shows up, with some snowplow drivers & the rest of Thanksgiving dinner, including a turkey with turkey pox.

Possible Activities:
Discuss chicken pox, what they are & how you get them
Have your child find all the uses of onomatopoeia
Give your turkey Turkey Pox

Beauty & the Beaks
In this pun filled story, Beauty is a hen who runs the beauty shop on the farm. A turkey, Lance, shows up, talking about a big feast that only he was invited to, making all the hens feel bad. Beauty finds out that Lance is not a guest, but part of the menu & warns him. The hens give Lance a makeover, so he looks like a big hen, to save his life.

Possible activities:
Have your child find all the puns
Learn about the differences between chickens & turkeys
Print turkey coloring pages, or make construction paper turkey & have your children dress them up to disguise them

It's Thanksgiving is a book of fun kids' poem about Thanksgiving from children's poet Jack Prelutsky.

Possible Activities:
Have each child write their own Thanksgiving poem
Have each child search to find other Thanksgiving poems
Have each child memorize their favorite Thanksgiving poem & recite it to the whole family on Thanksgiving

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

I remember watching this Steve Martin & John Candy comedy with my parents as a fairly young child. However, since it is rated R, you should probably watch it without your kids first, to see if there is anything in it you disapprove of your kids seeing. It has been many years since I last watched it, but I remember it being pretty funny.

Steve Martin plays a man trying to get home for Thanksgiving. As things go wrong for him, he winds up stuck traveling with an obnoxious shower curtain ring salesman (played, of course, by John Candy). As you would expect in a movie starring these two, hijinks ensue & they have a rather, let's say eventful trip.
